How to choose the best computer

With so many brands, sizes, features and prices, picking out the ideal PC from a sea of choices can be a nightmare. To help you home in to the right buy, here are four buzzwords to look out for.


AMD Radeon 5650


If you're a serious gamer and want to look for a powerful laptop with superior graphics, you have got to remember the name of this graphics card - AMD Radeon 5650. The 5650 is a popular graphics card, but is only beginning to be seen in entry-level gaming laptops that are generally within the $1200 to $1600 price range. 


So if you're on a budget and want to run your games in high resolution, or at least have the most demanding games run in smoothly-rendered low resolution, look out for this card. A powerful graphics card also helps improve high-definition video streaming and editing experience and also help to reduce RAM usage when playing games. 


There are, of course, better and more superior graphic cards like the Nvidia GeForce GT435M and the Radeon 5730 that you might want to consider. But, keep in mind that laptops having these graphic cards would most probably cost you around $3000 to $5000, depending on the type of RAM, processor speed, etc.


Notebook brands often play up processor clockspeeds to differentiate their products from others, but the one specification that arguably matters more is the graphics card type. As most vendors will fit processors and graphics cards that are of a matching performance level in the same machine, you can be sure that if your machine comes with the 5650, the processor will also be decent. 


SSD


Solid State Drive, or SSD, is a flash-based alternative to the Hard Disk Drive, or also called HDD. SSDs are more reliable because they have no mechanical parts and have a much better chance of surviving a drop. SSDs also promise better performance than hard drives, with boot-up speeds as much as three times faster. 


SSDs are also more power efficient so laptops can run longer on battery power. However, SSDs cost a lot more than hard disks. A 128GB SSD drive costs about $300. On the other hand, a 750GB laptop hard drive goes for about $150. Do note that given SSD technology is very new and still evolving, the SSDs found in laptops are often inferior to those you can buy off the shelf.


There is also a hybrid SSD/hard disk option which promises better performance than regular hard disk drive but it is still inferior to the pure SSD system.


3D games and movies


To play games and view movies in stereoscopic 3D, you need a 3D capable graphics card, 3D screen, the right software, 3D Blu-ray drive as well as a pair of special glasses to enjoy the eye-popping experience.


Do not have to worry about having to figure out the technical specs. Just look out for the 3D logo and the PC should be able to play games and view movies in 3D. Considering the new Blu-ray and 3D technology, having a laptop with a 3D capable graphics card, 3D screen, the right software, 3D Blu-ray drive as well as a pair of special glasses would be very costly.


Eyefinity 


Eyefinity is the feature in AMD graphics cards that lets you combine three monitors into a single contiguous display. For gamers, this means that you can now see three times as much as before. The added peripheral vision will be extremely valuable when playing racing and dogfighting games, as well as first-person shooters.


Eyefinity is available on both desktop and laptop PCs running on an AMD Radeon 5000 series card, which is just about any modern PC running on an AMD card. However, you'll need a sufficiently powerful card - we recommend at least a Radeon 5770 card. 


While Eyefinity desktops are now common, it is rare to find an Eyefinity capable laptop today as there is often insufficient space to fit 3 output displays, one of which must be a Display Port. But with the new Radeon 6000 series of cards launching in laptops next year, it will support the new Display Port 1.2 version which lets you connect a single mini-Display Port to 3 monitors. 


So here are the four buzzwords to look out for when choosing a suitable laptop. Some pictures below showing 3D games, movies, etc...

iPad 2

There's been quite a buzz around the next iPad. The one you're using now could be exactly or similar to the iPad 2. Competition is non-existent for iPad right now. All the other companies, like Samsung, have tablets shipping already, and many more of the more formidable iPad competitors will be out in 2011. 

Apple’s going to do what it can to get the iPad 2 out next year only for that one liner that Steve loves, “We’re releasing the next iPad today before our competitors have even caught up with the first generation.” He’s used that line a few times, but the iPad itself will probably look very similar to the one you’re holding in your hand right now. I predict it will have the same aluminum back, the same bezel and similar weight and the battery life will be mostly unchanged. What will be new?

New screen size
The rumour going around says that a 7" model is on its way to sit right beside the current 9" model, and due to Apple's resolution independence and growing number of developers, a new screen size wouldn't cause much issues beyond a few optimizations that have to happen from App Store developers to make things look perfect. 


The new screen size will probably help the iPad to reach a lower price for consumers and compete with the other tablets. 


New screen resolution 
You can be sure that there would be a new screen resolution to the 2nd generation of the iPad. With Apple's Retina Display in the iPhone 4, there's no doubt that the iPad would soon have it. This is an inevitable upgrade that is going to force us early adopters who own an iPad and an iPhone 4 to jump in line.


New design
I’m doubtful of this one but it’s worth mentioning in this post. Apple generally waits two to three refreshes before redoing the overall hardware of its devices, but a thinner iPad may be in line that mimics much of Apple’s iPhone 4. Squaring off the design would help the device lay flat, but would also make it more susceptible to scratches. This is a maybe as Apple can legitimately call this a second generation iPad without modifying the outer shell. Of course, if it’s releasing a smaller screen size, it might be a good idea to change things up a bit to throw off the competition. 


Built-in cameras
It is said that a revamped model of the iPad would feature cameras on the front and back of the device, just like an iPhone, enabling Apple's Facetime video conferencing service. Increasing the iPad 2's capabilities with a built-in camera would surely attract more consumers. 


How the iPad would really look is a closely guarded secret by Apple. But with nearly 13 million units of the iPad expected to be shipped by year-end since its launch in April, the anticipation is growing over the next version.

Azureus (Vuze) vs. uTorrent

Torrents are one of the best ways to download huge files like movies, TV seasons, etc. To download, a BitTorrent client like uTorrent or Azureus (also called Vuze) is needed. uTorrent and Vuze are two freeware BitTorrent clients that really stand out from the crowd. 

Since these are the most popular ones, it's only natural that a lot of people argue about which one is a better torrent downloader: Vuze or uTorrent? Both of them have their pros and cons, some of which are listed below. Both clients, however, are fully capable of creating, downloading and seeding .torrent files, as well as doing a lot of smart and advanced things like automatically downloading from RSS feeds, using multiple trackers, banning specific IP addresses, or setting download priorities for each file inside the torrent separately.

Vuze is a powerful open source BitTorrent client with a huge amount of features and support for  3rd party plugins. Azureus recently evolved into Vuze, a peer-to-peer network of high quality video content. 

Vuze requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to run, which is good as it can run on any operating system that supports JRE, and it is bad because Java-based Vuze uses quite a lot of system resources. Many people say that Vuze downloads faster than uTorrent, but tests have been conflicting. Until now, there's still no definite conclusion.

uTorrent is a lightweight and efficient torrent downloader. It is closed source, which Azureus fans are quick to point out as a big flaw. There used to be no plugin support, but in the newest edition of uTorrent, you will find many more features like Virus Guard, Skins, uMap, so on and so forth. 

Unlike Vuze client, uTorrent is not Java-based. This is good as uTorrent does not use much CPU or RAM and is small and fast. The only sad thing about uTorrent is it's compatibility with the other operating systems. Hence, it is unable to run on Mac, Linux and other operating systems. 

There is no doubt that uTorrent is faster than Azureus when it comes to the program itself, but on the other hand, various Azureus and uTorrent speed comparison tests have shown different results, so it's not clear which torrent client can produce higher download speeds.

So which one would you choose? uTorrent or Vuze? Personally, i would choose uTorrent as it is small and fast. With the new version of uTorrent available, including plugins and stuff like that, it's no doubt that i would stick to uTorrent. For users of other operating systems, don't worry... You've still got Vuze! And if your computer is fast, Vuze wouldn't be that taxing to the system.
